How to Store Razor Blades So They Don’t Rust

Dry the blade, dry the razor, and keep both out of the bathroom. Rust on a double edge blade is almost never a manufacturing fault. It is water sitting on steel in a humid room, and a day of that is enough to spoil an edge.

Unopened blades stay wrapped

Blades ship in wax paper or foil for a reason. That wrapper plus a trace of factory oil is the corrosion barrier, so leave a tuck sealed until you are ready to use it.

Keep the tucks in a drawer or a closed tin somewhere dry, a bedroom or a hall closet, not the bathroom cabinet.

Stored that way they keep for years. Stainless steel has no real shelf life problem as long as it stays dry.

The blade currently in your razor

After the shave, rinse the head under hot water, shake it out hard, and pat it with a towel.

Hot water helps because the residual heat carries off the last of the film. Cold water leaves droplets sitting in the blade gap.

Shaving daily, that is enough. Shaving twice a week, take the razor apart and rest the blade on a dry cloth between uses.

Humidity is the real culprit

A shower room can hold heavy humidity for an hour after you walk out. A blade parked in that air will show spotting within days.

Move the razor to a bedroom shelf or a cupboard outside the bathroom. This single change does more than everything else here combined.

Blade banks and disposal

Used blades belong in a blade bank, a small metal tin with a slot in the lid. Never loose in a bin, and never in a paper bag.

One tin holds years of blades and goes to metal recycling when it fills up.

Keep it away from the sink too. A wet blade bank is just a tin of rust.

Note the day you load a blade, either on your phone or as a tally mark on the blade bank.
