Skintimate Shave Gel: What Is in the Can and Who It Suits

Skintimate shave gel lavender aerosol can with foam and a pink razor on a bathroom shelf

Skintimate is Edgewell’s women’s shave gel, and every can in the line is built on one shared formula: water, palmitic and stearic acid neutralised with triethanolamine, glyceryl oleate, sorbitol, PVP, and an isopentane and isobutane propellant blend. The variants differ in the last five or six ingredients and in the scent. A 7 oz can sells for $3.99 at Target.

It suits you if you shave legs and underarms with a cartridge razor in the shower and want a fast, cushioned, rinse-clean lather. It does less for a safety razor, and the reason is in the formula itself.

What the ingredient list is doing

The palmitic and stearic acid plus triethanolamine form the soap. That is the part that lathers and lets the blade slide. The isopentane and isobutane do two jobs: they push the gel out of the can, and because they are dissolved in the gel, they expand the moment you rub it, turning a translucent gel into foam.

PVP is a film former, the same polymer used in hair gel. It leaves a thin layer on the skin that gives the razor something to glide over after the foam thins. Sorbitol holds water, and glyceryl oleate is the emollient.

Olive fruit oil, hydrogenated vegetable oil and vitamin E acetate sit near the bottom of every label, below the propellants, so the moisturising effect is modest.

Two label details are worth knowing before you pick a can. The Sensitive Skin version still lists fragrance and Red 40, so it is a milder scent, not a fragrance-free formula. Dry Skin is the only variant with lanolin alcohol, which is the ingredient that leaves the slightly waxy after-feel some people like and some find greasy.

Who the gel suits

A cartridge razor with a lubricating strip already carries half its glide on the head. All it needs from the prep is softened hair and a layer the blade can see through once the foam collapses, and that is exactly what PVP plus thin foam delivers. If you are choosing between options for a shower shave, the shaving cream for women roundup puts this gel next to its competitors.

Edgewell also makes Edge, its men’s gel, on a very similar chassis. The differences come down to scent and a few actives, which is why the Edge shave gel vs cream comparison reads almost identically for Skintimate.

Where a foaming gel loses to a lathering cream on a DE razor

A double-edge blade has no lubricating strip and no pivoting head. It wants a dense, wet, slick layer that stays on the skin through two or three passes. Aerosol foam is mostly gas. It feels thick on the first stroke, then collapses and dries to a thinner film than a brush-built lather.

Foam also hides the skin. With a cartridge you can shave blind. With a DE on knees and ankles you need to see the angle, which is why a translucent cream or a thin soap lather works better for a safety razor on your legs.

If you own both razors, keep the Skintimate for cartridge days and a tub of lathering cream for DE days.

Questions readers ask

Is Skintimate Sensitive Skin shave gel fragrance-free?

No. The Target.com ingredient list for Skin Therapy Sensitive Skin includes fragrance and Red 40. It is a lighter scent than the Signature Scents cans, but if you need fragrance-free you will have to look at a different brand.

Can men use Skintimate shave gel?

Yes. The base formula is a standard triethanolamine soap gel with propellant, very close to Edgewell's Edge gel for men. The only things gendered about it are the scent and the can colour.

Does Skintimate work with a safety razor?

It works, but it is not the best choice. The foam collapses between passes and hides the skin, so you lose the slick, visible layer a DE blade benefits from. A lathering cream or soap gives a safety razor more consistent protection.
