Taylor of Old Bond Street Shaving Cream: The Scent Line Explained

Taylor of Old Bond Street shaving cream comes in 18 bowl scents on the brand’s own UK store, and only three of them also come in a 75ml tube: Sandalwood, Jermyn Street and Mr Taylor. Pick the scent family first, then the format.

How the lineup sorts by scent family

The store tags every cream with a fragrance family. Woody covers Sandalwood, Cedarwood, Oud and Tobacco Leaf. Citrus holds Eton College, St James, Lime Zest, Grapefruit and Royal Forest, while Mr Taylor, Lavender and Rose sit under Floral.

The rest stand apart. Almond, Coconut and Peppermint are filed as fruity. Natural is the scent-free cream, and Jermyn Street is the allergen-free one the brand formulated for sensitive skin, described as a modern fougère.

Mr Taylor is the house fragrance, dating back to 1957 according to the brand. If you want the scent Taylor built its name on, start there or with Sandalwood.

The newest addition, Spicy Sandalwood, is not a straight sandalwood. The brand lists pink pepper, geranium, lavender and rosemary up top, with patchouli, sandalwood and vetiver in the base. Expect a barbershop fougère more than a woody cream.

Bowl, tube or small travel bowl

The 150g bowl is the default, at £12.95 or £14.95 depending on scent. A 75ml size exists as a tube for three scents and as a small bowl for Sandalwood, Cedarwood, Eton College and Jermyn Street.

The brand calls the Sandalwood tube a tube version of the same classic and publishes no separate formula for it. So choose on handling. A tube lets you squeeze an almond-sized dab straight onto the brush, which suits travel. A bowl lets you swirl a damp brush across the surface the way you would load a soap.

On cost the bowl wins clearly. Sandalwood works out at about 8.6p per gram in the 150g bowl against about 11.9p per millilitre in the 75ml tube. Buy the bowl for home and the tube only if you shave away from home often.

How it lathers next to Proraso and Cremo

Taylor’s cream is a brush cream. You whip it with a wet brush in a bowl or on your face until it turns glossy, the same routine covered in our guide to Proraso shaving cream. Proraso’s green version leans on menthol and eucalyptus; Taylor’s descriptions talk about scent and lather, not cooling.

Cremo is a different product. It is a brushless cream you spread thin with your fingers, so it will not replace a Taylor bowl if you already own a brush.

Still deciding between a cream and a hard puck? Read shaving soap vs shaving cream first. Creams build lather with less brush work, which is the main reason people pick Taylor over a puck.

Which Taylor cream to buy first

  • Sandalwood if you want the classic with the widest choice of sizes.
  • Jermyn Street or Natural if your skin reacts to heavily fragranced products.
  • Eton College or Lime Zest if you want citrus for warm months.
  • The 5ml samples at £0.79 each if you cannot decide between 12 of the scents.
