Single edge razor blades in GEM, injector, and Artist Club formats beside a metal razor

Single edge razor blades come in three families: GEM, Injector, and AC, and a blade from one family will not fit a razor built for another. Format comes before brand, before sharpness, before everything. Buy the format your razor takes, then experiment inside that format.

GEM blades, the thick old standard

GEM blades carry a thick back spine that stiffens the edge, around 0.009 inches of steel against roughly 0.004 for a double edge blade, manufacturer figures. They fit vintage GEM 1912s, G-Bars, and Eveready razors, plus modern stainless razors built to the same spec. The spine is the reason a GEM razor cuts differently than a DE: the blade presents at a fixed angle with no blade flex. GEM blades also stay cheap, a few dollars for a pack of ten at street price, which is part of the format’s pull.

Injector blades and the guide pin

Injector blades are the Schick format: a narrow blade with a hole and guide pin that seats it in the head, originally loaded from a magazine with a key that pushed the old blade out as the new one went in. Personna and Crown still make them. The classic mistake is assuming an injector razor takes GEM blades because both look single edge; the pin and the blade length make them incompatible. AC blades, the premium lane

AC means Artist Club, the format Feather popularized in its Artist Club shavettes and that OneBlade uses in stainless razors. These blades run longer and thicker than GEM, with professional-grade edges, and they cost for it: street price lands near a dollar or more per blade against pocket change for DE. Variety is thinner too. Blade sampler packs let you test across GEM and injector cheaply, but AC sampling gets expensive fast.

That is the failure mode for the whole category: cost drift. AC shaving is superb and runs several times the per-blade cost of DE, and if you shave daily the arithmetic compounds. GEM and injector users get most of the experience at a fraction of the price.
