Single Edge Razors: GEM, Injector, and Modern Revivals

The catch shows up after checkout. Single edge blades, not the razors, are the scarce commodity, so the format you pick decides where you can buy blades for the next decade.

GEM razors, the cheap way in

Vintage GEM razors from the early twentieth century, the 1912, the G-bar, the push-button models, still shave the way they did new, and clean examples cost a fraction of a modern stainless razor. Personna keeps the blades in production, so an inexpensive antique remains a usable daily shaver rather than a shelf ornament. The blade sits flat with the edge exposed, which gives a louder, more efficient feel than a standard bar guard.

Injector razors, the format that refuses to die

Schick built the injector razor around a small key that loads one blade at a time, fingers never touching the edge. The mechanism was clever enough that injector blades are still manufactured decades later, and the differences between injector and double edge blades affect your daily shave more than any razor head does. Vintage injectors are cheap, mild and forgiving, which makes them an easy recommendation for sensitive skin.

The modern revivals

Where the format fails you

Walk into a drugstore and you might find double edge blades. You will not find GEM or injector blades. Mail order is the only reliable channel, single edge blades cost more per unit, and the sampler culture that makes double edge fun barely exists here; what razor blade sampler packs cover will not help a GEM owner. If you travel light or shop locally, that constraint matters more than shave quality.
