What the two razors share
Both makers describe a closed comb head. Mühle’s EU page says shaving with a closed comb is a gentler experience than open comb, with a result that is just as precise.
Both are standard double edge razors that take an ordinary blade, and both unscrew at the head to change it. Our Edwin Jagger DE89 review covers that razor on its own, and the best safety razor for beginners page shows where each sits in a wider list.
Shaving angle applies to both razors
This 7 minute video defines shaving angle as the angle between the blade and your skin, then gives three rules for finding it on any razor.
Mühle R89 vs Edwin Jagger DE89: head, finish and source
| Razor | Head | Finish | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mühle R89 | Closed comb | Chrome-plated metal | Mühle product pages, US and EU |
| Edwin Jagger DE89 | Closed comb, two-piece die-cast head | Solid brass, triple plated, chrome finish | Edwin Jagger US product page |
Head and finish are quoted from each maker’s page, read 1 November 2026. Neither page says the heads are shared.

Where the handles differ
The Edwin Jagger DE89 handle is machined from solid brass, triple plated and chrome finished, 83 mm long in a 93 mm razor that weighs 68 g, per Edwin Jagger’s page.
The Mühle R89 is chrome-plated metal, 92 to 94 mm long depending on which Mühle page you read, at 70 or 70.3 g. Mühle does not say what the metal is.
Where you hold the razor is a separate question from handle length. The video further down grips it by the head end, like a pen, and treats the rest of the handle as a counterweight.

How to hold a safety razor
This 12 minute video shows how to assemble and take apart a safety razor, then how to hold it near the head so the handle only balances the head.

List prices read on each maker’s own site, checked October 2026: Mühle US, Mühle EU, Edwin Jagger and Merkur. Merkur sells in euros only. Length figures come from each maker’s own page and may not be measured the same way. Amazon prices change daily; the buttons show today’s price.
What do these razors cost over the years you keep them?
Formula: shaves a year = shaves per week x 52. Blades a year = shaves a year / shaves per blade. Blade cost a year = blades a year x (pack price / blades in pack). Total = razor price + blade cost a year x years. Cost per shave = total / (shaves a year x years). The Merkur price is euros x the rate above.
Which one to buy
The makers’ pages give you two clear differences: a 2 g weight gap and the handle material. Pick the brass handle if you want a named metal, and pick on today’s Amazon price if the handle does not matter to you.
Check the box contents on the listing you buy from, because Edwin Jagger’s own page counts one Feather blade while the Amazon DE89BL listing says the blade is not included.
Spend what you save on blades. Our blade sampler guide shows how to try several before you commit to a 100 pack, and how to use a safety razor covers technique.
How we sourced these figures
Weight, length, handle material and list prices come from Mühle’s US and EU product pages, Edwin Jagger’s US page and Merkur’s 34C page, all read on 1 November 2026. Amazon listings were read the same day for the ASIN titles and box contents.
Where Mühle’s two pages differ, 70 g against 70.3 g and 94 mm against 92 mm, the table shows both. Neither maker says the two heads are shared, and we found no maker statement either way.
We did not test either razor, and nothing here is a shave result. Calculator prices are placeholders you edit, not Amazon prices.
Muhle R89 vs Edwin Jagger DE89: questions answered
Is the Mühle R89 the same as the Edwin Jagger DE89?
No maker says so. Mühle lists a closed comb head, 70 g and a chrome-plated metal handle. Edwin Jagger lists a closed comb head, 68 g and a solid brass handle. On paper they differ by 2 g and in handle material, and neither page mentions a shared head.
Which is better for beginners, the R89 or the DE89?
Both makers describe a closed comb head, and Mühle’s EU page says a closed comb gives a gentler shave than open comb. Neither page ranks the two for beginners. Choose on handle material, weight and today’s price, then put the savings into a blade sampler.
Does the Mühle R89 shave closer than the Edwin Jagger DE89?
Neither maker publishes a closeness figure, so no source ranks them. Both use a closed comb head. Mühle’s Amazon listing advises drawing the blade across taut skin with no pressure, which holds for any razor, and blade choice changes the result too.
Which costs less, the R89 or the DE89?
On the makers’ US stores read on 1 November 2026, Mühle lists the R89 at $48.00 and Edwin Jagger lists the DE89 at an RRP of $44.18. Amazon prices change daily, so use the buttons for today’s price and the calculator to add blade costs.
Does the Edwin Jagger DE89 come with a blade?
Edwin Jagger’s page says one Feather blade is included. The Amazon DE89BL listing says the stainless steel blade is not included. Mühle’s EU page says one classic razor blade comes with the R89. Check the listing you buy from before you order blades.
How does the Merkur 34C compare with these two?
Merkur lists the 34C at 78 g, with a brass handle and a zinc die-cast head, so it is 8 g heavier than the R89 and 10 g heavier than the DE89. Merkur’s own guide groups it with its gentle straight bar razors with a fixed gap.
