Merkur 34C vs 23C vs 37C vs Futur: Which Merkur Fits You

Merkur safety razor models lined up on a slate counter for comparison

Merkur’s own guide puts the 34C and 23C in a gentle class with a fixed gap of about 0.5 to 0.6 mm, the 37C in a slant bar class, and the Futur 700 at the top with an adjustable gap of 0.9 to 1.9 mm.

Quick answer
Start with the 34C: Merkur lists it at 78 g with a brass handle and a straight bar closed comb head from its gentle class. Take the 23C for a longer handle (104 mm, 61 g) and the 37C slant for wiry, dense hair. The Futur 700 adjusts from 0.9 to 1.9 mm, and Merkur calls it the expert model.

The 34C and 23C share a head, not a handle

Merkur’s guide lists both in its gentle straight bar class with the same fixed gap. What changes is the handle.

The 34C is 81 mm and 78 g. Merkur’s page says the heavy weight gives more gripping power and a smooth shave.

The 23C is 104 mm and 61 g. Merkur says it dates from the 1920s and that its long handle and straight foam edge give a smooth shave, and Amazon’s listing says the long handle suits large hands.

Loading a two piece versus a three piece razor

This 6 minute video shows a twist to open razor, a three piece head and a two piece Merkur 37C, and how a blade goes into each, with the pros and cons of the three designs.

Twist to open, three piece and two piece razors, loaded one after another.

Merkur 34C vs 23C: which one should you buy?

Razor Head class Length Weight Pieces Pick it if
Merkur 34C Gentle straight bar 81 mm 78 g Two piece You want the weight Merkur says adds gripping power, and two piece loading
Merkur 23C Gentle straight bar 104 mm 61 g Three piece You want the long handle that Amazon’s listing says suits large hands

Length and weight from Merkur’s product pages, piece counts from the Amazon listings.

The head is the same class on both, so the choice is handle length, weight and loading. Both take any standard double edge blade, per Merkur.

Merkur 34C HD: what the name means

Merkur’s 34C page says the razor is known among fans as the HD, short for Heavy Duty, a name it earned over the last 80 years from its weight. The razor is sold as the 34C, and HD is fan shorthand.

So a listing for the 34C HD and one for the 34C are the same razor. Amazon’s listing titles it the Mk34c with a Heavy Duty short handle, with manufacturer part number 90 34 001.

The 37C slant bar

Merkur’s guide says the slightly angled blade adds a slicing motion with every stroke, and that slant razors suit users with coarse or dense beards. Merkur’s 37C page says fans call it the sledgehammer.

It is the same size as the 34C: 81 mm and 78 g, a brass handle and a die-cast zinc head, two piece. The difference sits in the head, a straight bar on the 34C against a slant bar on the 37C.

Merkur’s guide asks for light pressure and straight strokes on every model. See mild vs aggressive razors for how head geometry sets aggressiveness.

The Futur 700 is the adjustable one

Merkur says you attach the blade with the Duo Clip, then turn the handle to set the gap. It suggests a large gap for long hair and a gentle setting for the daily face shave, and it has made the Futur since 1986.

At 129 g and 108 mm, the Futur 700 weighs 51 g more than the 34C and is 27 mm longer, with a die-cast zinc body and no brass. Merkur’s guide calls it the most aggressive of its razors and says it demands a steady hand and some technique.

Which Merkur to buy first

Your situation Buy this Main drawback
Sensitive skin, or your first razor, with average hands Merkur 34C Short handle, which Amazon’s listing says in its title. Merkur’s guide points sensitive skin at this class.
Large hands Merkur 23C The lightest of the four at 61 g, per Merkur.
Medium to coarse stubble, or wiry dense hair, with some experience Merkur 37C Outside Merkur’s gentle class.
Experienced, dense beard, and you want to adjust the gap Merkur Futur 700 The heaviest of the four at 129 g, and Merkur says it demands a steady hand.

Situations follow Merkur’s aggressiveness guide. The experience steps in the picker above are our rule of thumb.

Merkur’s guide sends sensitive skin to the fixed gap straight bar razors, medium to coarse stubble to slant or adjustable razors, and experienced users with dense beards to the Futur. Spend the next budget on blades: see finding the right safety razor blade.

How we sourced these figures

Size, weight and materials come from Merkur’s product pages for the 34C, 23C, 37C and Futur 700. Gap and class come from Merkur’s own aggressiveness guide, all read on 1 November 2026.

Piece counts, the long handle for large hands and the short handle wording come from the four Amazon listings, read the same day with titles checked against each ASIN. Merkur’s pages do not print piece counts.

The picker’s month steps are our rule of thumb. We did not test these razors, and nothing here is a shave result.

Merkur razor questions answered

Is the Merkur 34C or 23C better for a beginner?

Merkur’s guide puts both in its gentle straight bar class with a fixed gap of about 0.5 to 0.6 mm, so the head does not separate them. The 34C is 81 mm, 78 g and two piece. The 23C is 104 mm, 61 g and three piece, so pick on handle.

What is the difference between the Merkur 34C and 23C?

Handle, weight and pieces. Merkur lists the 34C at 81 x 43 x 25 mm and 78 g, and the 23C at 104 x 43 x 25 mm and 61 g. Amazon lists the 34C as two piece and the 23C as three piece. The head class is the same.

What does HD mean on the Merkur 34C?

HD stands for Heavy Duty. Merkur’s 34C page says fans use that name because of the razor’s massive weight, which Merkur lists at 78 g. It is the same razor sold as the 34C, and Amazon’s listing carries manufacturer part number 90 34 001.

Is the Merkur 37C slant too aggressive for daily shaving?

Merkur does not publish a daily use limit, so no source answers that directly. Its guide lists slant bar razors as a separate class from the gentle straight bar ones, favored for coarse or dense beards, and asks for light pressure on every model.

Does the Merkur Futur replace owning several razors?

Merkur says you can work long hair with a large gap and do the daily face shave with a gentle setting, across a gap of 0.9 to 1.9 mm. Its guide also calls the Futur its most aggressive model, which asks for a steady hand and technique.

What is the difference between two piece and three piece razors?

A two piece razor, like the 34C and 37C per Amazon’s listings, twists open at the base so the head comes out and the blade sits on it. A three piece razor, like the 23C, comes apart into handle, baseplate and top cap. The video above loads both.
